What Is the Saudi STEP Exam and Why Is Score 85+ the Golden Target?

The STEP exam (Standardized Test of English Proficiency — اختبار كفايات اللغة الإنجليزية قياس), administered by Saudi Arabia’s Education and Training Evaluation Commission (ETEC / Qiyas), is the primary English proficiency requirement for Saudi universities (KSU, KAU, KFUPM), postgraduate programs, scholarship tracks, military colleges, and leading employers such as Saudi Aramco, SABIC, and STC.

While a score of 60–75 satisfies basic admission requirements, achieving 85+ on the STEP exam places you in the top percentile (equivalent to CEFR C1 / IELTS 6.5–7.0), unlocking course exemptions and elite career opportunities. You can also compare STEP and IELTS scores in our STEP vs. IELTS Score Equivalency Guide.

Official STEP Exam Breakdown & Section Weights (100 Questions)

Unlike IELTS, the STEP exam does not include a live speaking interview or long essay writing task. It consists of 100 multiple-choice questions divided into four weighted components:

STEP Section Weight (%) Approx. Questions Core Skills Tested
1. Reading Comprehension (الاستيعاب المقروء) 40% ~40 questions Skimming, scanning, inference, vocabulary in context, and pronoun reference
2. Structure & Grammar (التراكيب النحوية) 30% ~30 questions If-conditionals, tenses, passive voice, relative clauses, and subject-verb agreement
3. Listening Comprehension (فهم المسموع) 20% ~20 questions Short dialogues, campus/workplace announcements, and speaker intent
4. Compositional Analysis (تحليل المكتوب) 10% ~10 questions Capitalization, punctuation, sentence order, and error identification

Section-by-Section Strategy to Reach 85+

1. Reading Comprehension (40%): Read the Questions First

The biggest trap in the STEP Reading section is reading the entire passage slowly from start to finish. Instead, use the Question-First Scanning Method:

  • Direct Detail Questions: Scan for capital letters, dates, numbers, and keywords in the specific paragraph mentioned.
  • Pronoun Reference Questions (e.g., "What does 'it' or 'they' refer to?"): Read the sentence immediately before the pronoun—the antecedent is almost always the main subject or object of the preceding clause.
  • Vocabulary-in-Context Questions: Even if you don't know the word, determine whether its tone in the sentence is positive, negative, or neutral, and eliminate mismatched choices.

2. Structure & Grammar (30%): The Top 6 High-Yield Grammar Rules

Over 75% of STEP grammar questions test six recurring rules:

  1. The 4 Conditionals (If-Clauses):
    • Zero/First: If + Present Simple → will + base verb
    • Second: If + Past Simple → would + base verb
    • Third: If + had + V3 (Past Participle) → would have + V3
  2. Past Continuous vs. Past Simple: While + Past Continuous (was/were + V-ing) interrupted by When + Past Simple (V2).
  3. Present Perfect Indicators: Look for since, for, already, yet, recently, so far → require has/have + V3.
  4. Subject-Verb Agreement with Prepositional Phrases: In "The list of items is on the desk", the verb agrees with the singular head noun (list), not items.
  5. Modals + Base Verb: After can, could, should, must, might, would rather, had better, always choose the bare infinitive (verb without to or -ing).
  6. Used to vs. Be used to: used to + base verb (past habit) vs. be/get used to + V-ing/noun (accustomed to).

3. Listening Comprehension (20%): Preview Before the Audio Plays

In STEP Listening, you hear the audio only once. Use the 10-second pause before each recording to read the four choices and underline the question word (Where, Why, What will the man do next?).

4. Compositional Analysis (10%): Easy Guaranteed Points

Do not lose marks on the final 10%! Memorize the core punctuation rules: use a comma after introductory dependent clauses ("Although it rained, we went out.") and never join two complete sentences with a comma alone (comma splice) without a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
