Why Mental Translation Slows Down Your Speech
When someone asks you a question in English, do you: (1) Translate it to Arabic, (2) Think of your answer in Arabic, (3) Translate it back to English, and (4) Finally speak? This 4-step translation loop takes 3 to 5 seconds and makes conversations feel unnatural.
3 Proven Exercises to Think Directly in English
1. Narrate Your Daily Life in Simple English
When making coffee, cleaning your room, or commuting in Cairo, talk to yourself in your mind: 'I am grabbing the kettle. It’s hot outside today. I need to finish this report by 3 PM.' This conditions your subconscious mind to associate actions directly with English words.
2. Learn 'Chunks' Not Isolated Words
Never memorize isolated words. Instead of memorizing 'decision', memorize the entire collocation: 'make a decision'. Instead of 'time', memorize 'waste time' or 'spend time'. Chunks require zero grammar assembly in your brain.
3. Use an English-to-English Learner's Dictionary
Stop using direct translation apps for every new word. Use Cambridge or Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries to read definitions in simple English. This keeps your brain immersed in the target language.
